About Rawdon
Around sixty kilometers north of Montreal, Rawdon is a Canadian municipality on the Ouareau River in southwestern Quebec. Matawinie is the administrative center of the Lanaudière County Municipality. The town of Rawdon is included in the Joliette federal district.
There is a medium-sized ski resort in Rawdon, a public school taught in both English and French, and a large number of tourists who use French as their primary language.
As the first town in the Canadian Shield, Rawdon is a natural starting point for any mountain adventure. There are many campers and cabins for summer visitors because to the area’s lakes and mountains. Less than a kilometer from the center of Rawdon, you’ll find the Dorwin and Manchester falls, as well as a public beach on the man-made Rawdon Lake. Temperatures reach upwards of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer and as low as -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit) in the winter.
In 1799, Sir Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings, was honored with the naming of the new settlement. Prior to 1844, the majority of the town’s residents were of Irish descent. After that year, however, French-Canadians began moving into the area and opening businesses. Rawdon, formerly part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, had a large influx of Russian, Ukrainian, and Belorussian noble families after World War I and the October Revolution. Formerly, Montcalm County included Rawdon. It wasn’t until 1998 that the Township of Rawdon and the Village of Rawdon, both founded in 1920, were merged into a single city. Ex-wrestler Raymond Rougeau was elected mayor of his hometown on November 8, 2021.
