About Estevan

The Canadian city of Estevan ranks as the province’s eighth-largest metropolis. Almost 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) separate it from the United States border with Canada. The city is located on the Souris River. Rural Municipality of Estevan No. 5 surrounds the city.

In 1892, when the Canadian Pacific Railway expanded through the area, the first people arrived in the area that would become Estevan. The settlement was founded in 1899, and by 1906 it had grown into a town. With a population of 5,000 or more, Estevan, Saskatchewan, was designated a city on March 1, 1957.

It was George Stephen’s official telegraphic address in Estevan that gave rise to the moniker.

The Canadian Pacific Railway’s first president, George Stephen, served from 1881 until 1888.

Statistics Canada counted 10,851 residents in private residences out of a total of 5,368 in Estevan in 2021, a decrease of -5.5 percent from the previous year’s population of 11,483. There were 1,535.7 people living in just 593.0 square kilometers (18.3 square miles) of land in the year 2021.

Besides agriculture, oil and gas extraction, coal mining, and power generation at the adjacent Boundary Dam Power Station and Shand Power Station are Estevan’s primary economic drivers.

The summers of Estevan are warm and relatively humid, but the winters are cold and generally lengthy and dry. January, the coldest month, has an average temperature of 13.7 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit).
