About Northwest Territories
Canada’s federal territory known as the Northwest Territories formerly known as North-Western Territory and North-West Territories. It is the largest and most populous of Canada’s three northernmost territories, with a land area of about 1,144,000 km2 (442,000 sq mi) and a population of 41,790 as of the 2016 census. The city is predicted to have 45,605 residents in 2022. According to the 2016 census, there were 19,569 people living in Yellowknife, making it the capital, largest settlement, and the only city in the territory. It was designated as the capital of the territory in 1967 under the Carrothers Commission’s suggestions.
On July 15, 1870, the Northwest Territories became a part of Canada as a constituent territory. Four times since then, the landmass has been cut up to make room for fresh provinces and territories or to expand existing ones. The formation of Nunavut to the east on April 1, 1999, pursuant to the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, reduced the area of the territory once again. Northern Northwest Territories are a part of the Arctic Archipelago, while southern Nunavut is primarily Arctic tundra. The Northwest Territories, however, have a milder temperature and are a mix of boreal woodland (taiga) and tundra.
