About Labrador City

Located in western Labrador (a region of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada), not far from the Quebec border, lies a town called Labrador City. As of the year 2021, there will be 7,412 people living there, making it the second-most populous municipality in Labrador after Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Wabush, a minor community close to Labrador City, will have around 1,964 residents in 2021. The combined “twin towns” are commonly referred to as Labrador West.

Labrador City was established in the 1960s to house workers for the Iron Ore Company of Canada, and iron ore mining remains the city’s primary industry today.

Land of the Hardworking People is Kamistiatusset, a Naskapi term and the town slogan of Labrador City. The coat of arms for Labrador City features a snowy owl with a scroll perched on top of a black spade on a crimson mound of earth. The image is a metaphor for the extraction of ferrous metal. Two caribou stand on either side of the spade. Caribou and snowy owls both call the Labrador City region home.

In 2022, government official Belinda Adams assumed the position of mayor.

Yvonne Jones, a member of the Liberal Party, has represented the federal riding of Labrador since a by-election in 2013. Since 2019, Jordan Brown, a member of the New Democratic Party, has represented the province’s Labrador West constituency in the House of Assembly.
