About Yukon
Canada’s westernmost and smallest territory, Yukon originally called Yukon Territory and also referred to as the Yukon) is also its most commonly used name. It has a population of 43,964 as of March 2022, making it the second-least populous province or territory in Canada. The capital of all three territories is Whitehorse, and it also happens to be the largest city there.
In 1898, the North-West Territories and Yukon were separated to form the Yukon Territory. Canada’s federal government officially recognized “Yukon” on March 27, 2002, when it signed into law the Yukon Act. Nonetheless, the name “Yukon Territory” is still commonly used, and Canada Post still uses the globally recognized postal abbreviation “YT” for the territory. In 2021, the territorial government altered its policy such that “The Yukon” would be the preferred name to use on all official territory government publications.
Both English and French are recognized as official languages of Yukon, although First Nations languages are also recognized by the government.
Mount Logan in Yukon’s Kluane National Park and Reserve is the highest mountain in Canada and the second-highest mountain in all of North America, with an elevation of 5,959 meters (19,551 feet) (after Denali in the U.S. state of Alaska).
