About La Tuque

North-central Quebec, Canada, is home to the city of La Tuque which is situated on the Saint-Maurice River between the larger urban centers of Trois-Rivières and Chambord. A total of 11,129 people called this region home as of Canada’s most recent census in 2021. About 28,000 square kilometers (11,000 square miles) makes it Canada’s largest urban region.

The surrounding rock structure, which resembles a French-Canadian knitted cap known as a tuque, is the source of the term, which dates back to the seventeenth century. There is a hat-shaped peak between the Saint-Maurice River (left bank) and the WestRock paper mill at La Tuque. This peak tops out at around 245 meters in altitude (804 ft). It’s about 400 meters (1,300 feet) upstream (northeast side) of the La Tuque hydroelectric power plant, and it’s placed about 200 meters (660 feet) from the river.

Indigenous Atikamekw people were the first to settle in the area now known as La Tuque. Settlers flocked to the region in the 1850s to harvest its abundant trees. In 1887, a post office was established in La Tuque, but the area wasn’t connected to the rest of the Mauricie until the National Transcontinental Railway was constructed in the early 1900s. This led to industrialization and the growth of a community on the east bank of the Saint-Maurice River, near a large set of falls.
