North of Montreal’s North Shore suburbs and to the northeast lies the city of Lavaltrie, which is part of the D’Autray Regional County Municipality in the southern part of the region of Lanaudière in Quebec, Canada (i.e., the suburbs located north of Laval). According to the 2011 Canadian Census, the total population was 13,267. The territory covers roughly 70 square kilometers, the vast majority of which is farmed.

Lavaltrie was founded by a group of French Huguenots in the 17th century. The intendant of New France, Jean Talon, distributed large tracts of land (called manors) to numerous nobles. In 1672, Talon granted the land on which modern-day Lavaltrie is built to a lieutenant named Sieur la Valtrie. Land occupants in the 18th century constructed the Chemin Du Roy, today known as Quebec Road 138, along the Saint Lawrence River to serve as a new transportation link between Montreal and Quebec City. Lavaltrie served as the hub of a vast network of lords’ manors for decades, all of which were dedicated to expanding the agricultural industry.

There were 14,425 people in Lavaltrie as of the 2021 Statistics Canada census, up from 13,657 the previous year. This number was spread out across 5,838 of the city’s 5,973 private homes. The population density in 2021 was 211.4 inhabitants per square kilometer or 547.6 per square mile, with a land area of 68.22 km2 (26.34 sq mi).

Lavaltrie’s proximity to the major highways 40 and 138 makes it convenient to travel to the rest of the Greater Montreal area, including the cities of Montreal and Laval as well as the northern crown. Connections to Trois-Rivières and Quebec City to the east and Ottawa to the west are made possible by A-40 from Lavaltrie. Access to the more rural parts of the Lanaudière region is made possible via the Autoroute 31 and Route 131, both of which terminate at the A-40 junction at Lavaltrie.
