About Lachute

Lachute, Quebec, Canada is a town in southwestern Quebec, located on the Rivière du Nord, a tributary of the Ottawa River, to the west of Mirabel International Airport, and 62 kilometers (39 miles) northwest of Montreal. It sits at the crossroads of several important roads in Quebec, including the provincial highways 148 and 158, as well as secondary roads 327 and 329, and is easily accessible from Autoroute 50.

Argenteuil Regional County Municipality has its administrative offices in Lachute, which is also home to Lachute Airport. Paper manufacturing and lumber production are its mainstays. There are roughly 14,000 people living there.

The North River (Rivière du Noord) has a cascade or falls called “La Chute” about 24 kilometers (15 miles) upstream from where it meets the Ottawa River. This name dates back to the 17th century.

A temporary French-speaking resident, Antoine Brunet arrived in Lachute in 1753. Jedediah Lane, a resident of Jericho, Vermont, acquired a sizable parcel of land on each bank of the North River, in what is now the town of Lachute, in 1796. In the same year, Loyalists on the run from the American Revolution joined Hezekiah Clark and his family, also from Jericho, in their new home near the falls on the North River. Two years later, when it was still known by its English name, Chute, only five families lived there.
