About Ingersoll

Southwestern Ontario, Canada is home to the town of Ingersoll, located on the Thames River in Oxford County. Woodstock is to the east, while London is to the west, since they are the closest major cities.

It is located north of Highway 401 and along the highway itself, giving Ingersoll a northern location. The community is traversed by County Road 119, Oxford, which is also known as Ontario Highway 19. The town is split down the middle by an east-west running rail line owned by Canadian National. Via Rail operates a service from the Ingersoll train station to many locations in Southwestern Ontario. Freight service is available to areas south of here through a CPR line that has spurs into local industry. The Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute is the local secondary institution of higher learning.

The area around Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, was first settled in the 1790s by families from New England; it gained notoriety for its homemade cheese production prior to the War of 1812[5]; and the County of Oxford, which included Ingersoll, became the site of the first cheese factories in Canada in the 1860s. In 1866, local businessmen banded together to have a cheese wheel made at the James Harris Cheese Factory, located south of Ingersoll, that weighed 7,300 pounds (3,311 kilograms) to promote the region’s cheese industry. In addition to being displayed at the New York State Fair in Saratoga, the “Mammoth Cheese” also traveled to London.
