Saskatchewan is a western Canadian province that shares borders with the U.S. states of Montana and North Dakota to the south and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and the Northwest Territories to the west. There are just two Canadian provinces that are completely landlocked, and they both happen to be Saskatchewan and Alberta. The population of Saskatchewan in 2022 was predicted to be 1,205,119. Saskatchewan has a total area of 651,900 square kilometers (251,700 square miles), and fresh water accounts for over 10% of that.

The northern half of the province is forested and lightly populated, while the southern plains half is home to the majority of the province’s population. Half of the population is concentrated in the two largest cities, Saskatoon and Regina. Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Swift Current, North Battleford, Estevan, Weyburn, Melfort, and Lloydminster are also important urban centers in the province. With 82.4% of the population being native English speakers, it’s clear that English is the language of choice in Saskatchewan.

Many different indigenous communities have lived in Saskatchewan for thousands of years. In 1690, Europeans began to explore the area, and by 1774, they had established permanent settlements there. In 1905, it was separated as its own province from the North-West Territories, which had previously encompassed the majority of the Canadian Prairies.
