The Canadian province of Newfoundland and is located in the country’s Atlantic area, far to the east. The province’s entire area is 405,212 square kilometers, including both the island of Newfoundland and the continental territory of Labrador (156,500 sq mi). Newfoundland and Labrador had an expected population of 521,758 in 2021. More over half of the province’s population lives on the Avalon Peninsula, which is part of Newfoundland and its smaller neighboring islands. Twenty kilometers to the west of the Burin Peninsula is Saint Pierre and Miquelon, a French overseas collectivity that shares a border with the province of Quebec.

Newfoundland and Labrador is the most linguistically homogeneous province in Canada, with 97% of inhabitants reporting English as their native language in the 2016 census. Newfoundland has been called “the most Irish place outside of Ireland” since the majority of its inhabitants trace their ancestry back to early English and Irish settlers.
