About Nunavut

Canada’s largest and northernmost territory, Nunavut is also its most populous. On April 1, 1999, the Northwest Territories were formally severed from the territory of Nunavut in accordance with the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act, which gave Inuit peoples control over the area. In 1993, the lines were drawn. The admission of Newfoundland as a province in 1949 was the only other significant alteration to Canada’s political map until the formation of Nunavut.

The territory of Nunavut includes the vast majority of Canada’s Arctic Archipelago. For context, the United States of America is the second largest country subdivision in North America and the fifth largest in the world (after Greenland). In 1995, a vote decided that the capital should move to Iqaluit (then known as Frobisher Bay) in eastern Baffin Island. Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay are also important population centers in the region.

The eastern and southern parts of Victoria Island in the west, as well as all islands in Hudson Bay, James Bay, and Ungava Bay, including Akimiski Island very far to the southeast, are also included in Nunavut. In all of Canada, this is the only geographical area that lacks a road connection to the rest of the continent.

The population of Nunavut is among the lowest of any Canadian province or territory.
